Adam Gordon went five-for-10 with three walks, five runs batted in, five runs scored, a pair of doubles and a home run in three games last weeks earning him McGill Universities' Athlete of the Week.
“It's a nice honor because everyone on the team works hard and when things go well it's nice to get recognition,” said Gordon. “But it matters more to get the birth to nationals I think the whole team is excited.”
Not only did the McGill Redmen baseball team earn a birth to the nationals, but they also swept Carlton in two games winning the Northern Conference Championship over the weekend.
Gordon is a fifth year centrefielder from Dollard Des Ormeaux studying mechanical engineering. With time spent at John Abbott College, he's actually spent seven seasons in the league giving him amplitude of knowledge and experience to share with his teammates.
“I think I've been through a lot, so I know not to ever go into panic mode,” said Gordon. “I try to calm guys down, encourage guys, people look to you to lead by example so you go out every day, work hard, show work ethic and hopefully guys will follow.”
The McGill Redmen are off to the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association national championship, a six-team tournament to be held in Ottawa, Oct. 19-21. It's the fifth time in the past eight years that McGill has qualified for Nationals with the Redmen earning the national title in 2006 and 2010.
“I think have a good shot, have to have depth at pitching and definitely have the confidence for our guys to give us some quality starts,” said Gordon. “By the end of the weekend, it's a very big advantage to have guys like that to set you apart, that along with the depth at all the positions give us a shot.”
It hasn't been the easiest of seasons for Gordon who battled through a shoulder injury which he suffered making a play in centrefield. The injury forced him to DH for a short amount of time, but with the playoffs in full swing Gordon's contributions won't be limited to the batter's box.
“It's the playoffs and whatever pain you have, you just play through it,” said Gordon.
As far as the athlete of the week honors, Gordon earns himself a gift certificate to Ye Old Orchard Pub, something that he's looking forward to sharing with his teammates who he gives a lot of credit for his success this season.
“Hopefully when I bring them out after next week it will be a celebration,” said Gordon. “It's one of the fun parts to hang out with the guys because we had a great group, kind of like a family which really adds to the experience of being on a team.”
