Alouettes' safety Kyries Hebert hosted a party last Friday night at the trendy Time Supper Club for his foundation Ky Cares to honour his team mate Anthony Calvillo and wife Alexia that benefited the Cedars' Cancer Institute.
The seven year CFL veteran was born in October so, “I celebrate my birthday by having my foundation recognize a different organization that battles breast cancer each year,” Hebert said.
Hebert, in his first season with the Alouettes, knew it was a simple decision to donate to Cedars and the Calvillo Fund. “Having competed against and now being with Anthony I have seen how special a person he is,” he said.
“It is an honour for me to be able to participate in the Calvillo Fund through this event tonight.”
From the red carpet entrance through dinner and on to the party and entertainment, which was provided by Marie-Alice Depestre who performed her latest single “Nous” from her recently released her album “Après la tempête” the evening went off to perfection.
“I was more nervous about this than on game day,” he said prior to the start of the soiree.
Hebert's efforts were supported not just by Calvillo but 40 of his mates signed up to attend and the Master of Ceremonies doing the red carpet interviews was receiver Brandon London, who handled the microphone as well as he does the football.
Ky Cares (www.kycaresfoundation.org) was established two years ago but Hebert has been participating in the communities he has played in as well as his home state of Louisiana since 2005.
“There was no one person or instance that inspired me,” said the Eunice Louisiana native. “Growing up we didn't have a lot (of material things) but there was a lot of love and I grew to know the importance of giving back.”
Through Ky Cares, youths are given the opportunity to attend football and cheer camps and participate in cheer competitions as well as have the opportunity to earn athletic scholarships.
Hebert raises funds for these activities through his annual golf tournament, gala and celebrity basketball game.
“Kyries has been very special he does a lot of stuff wherever he's located,” Anthony Calvillo said.
“When he approached us about this event with all the proceeds going to Cedars we felt it was a fantastic idea so we definitely jumped on board.”
