A scant twenty minutes after the polls closed, CTV News declared Liberal candidate and Jacques-Cartier incumbent Geoffrey Kelley the winner in the 2012 provincial election. Kelley, who earned more than 80% of the vote in the 2008 election, was successful for a sixth consecutive mandate and a loud cheer went up in his campaign headquarters in Pointe Claire.
As of press time, Kelley had garnered 74% of the total votes cast with 21,818 while CAQ hopeful Paola Hawa earned 4,255 votes (15%) for a second place finish. PQ candidate Olivier Gendreau, who earned six percent of the total vote in 2008, received a total of 988 votes, coming in after Green Party candidate Alex Tyrell in the contest who got 1,322 votes, earning the young man a third place result.
"I look forward to serving my constituents for another four years," Kelley told The Suburban moments after being declared winner. "I visited with a lot of people during the campaign and they told me there was lots of support for our party's message."
Kelley was also happy with the vote turnout which was a sharp contrast to what some pundits predicted would be "anglo apathy" towards the election. Kelley, who lives near Beacon Hill School which served as a polling station, sat out on his gallery and marveled at all of the voters who took the time out to voice their democratic prerogatives.
"People got out and voted and I am profoundly touched by their support," Kelley said.n
